Sṛṣṭi-krama: Brahmā’s Sequential Creation of Devas, Sages, and Sense-Presiding Powers
रसनेन्द्रियाच्च वरुणं निर्ममे तस्य मानिनम् / विंशद्वर्षानन्तरं तु तस्मादेवेद्रियात्प्रभुः
rasanendriyācca varuṇaṃ nirmame tasya māninam / viṃśadvarṣānantaraṃ tu tasmādevedriyātprabhuḥ
From the organ of taste He created Varuṇa, the dignified presiding deity of that faculty. Then, after an interval of twenty years, the Lord again brought forth another manifestation from that same sense.
Lord Vishnu (narrating to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Adhidaiva of rasana (taste) is Varuṇa; senses are not merely biological but cosmically governed principles.
Vedantic Theme: Interdependence of jīva’s faculties with devatā-order; recognition of ṛta/niyati behind experience.
Application: Practice moderation in taste (dietary restraint); offer food/water with reverence; cultivate truthfulness and ethical restraint associated with Varuṇa’s moral sovereignty.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: cosmic domain
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.13 (rasanendriya-devatā mapping continues)
This verse presents the devatā–indriya mapping: Varuṇa is described as the presiding power connected with taste, showing that sense-functions are governed by cosmic intelligences, not merely physical organs.
It depicts creation as an ordered emergence where the Lord manifests deities and functions from specific faculties (like the sense of taste), emphasizing a structured, purposeful cosmology.
Treat sensory life—especially food and taste—with restraint and purity, remembering that sense-use is sacred and accountable within dharma.
