Jñāna-hetu-nirūpaṇa

On the Causes/Means of Knowledge

तथैव ज्ञानमस्त्येव हरेर्नारायणस्य च / वायोरंशावतारोस्ति यथा मूले तथैव च

tathaiva jñānamastyeva harernārāyaṇasya ca / vāyoraṃśāvatārosti yathā mūle tathaiva ca

Likewise, true knowledge indeed belongs to Hari—Nārāyaṇa. And there exists an incarnation as a partial manifestation of Vāyu; just as it is in the root, so it is in the same way in its manifestation.

Lord Vishnu (Narayana) addressing Garuda (Vinata-putra)

Concept: Hari-Nārāyaṇa is intrinsically endowed with true knowledge; Vāyu admits partial manifestation while retaining identity with the root principle.

Vedantic Theme: Bhedābheda-style articulation of mūla and aṃśa; divine attributes as essential vs manifestational gradations.

Application: Anchor understanding and devotion in Nārāyaṇa as the stable ground of knowledge; interpret varying capacities in beings as degrees of manifestation rather than defects in the source.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

FAQs

This verse asserts that authentic jñāna is grounded in Hari (Nārāyaṇa), implying that spiritual understanding is ultimately sourced in the Supreme rather than in merely worldly learning.

It indicates that there are manifestations that arise as a ‘portion’ (aṁśa) of a deity such as Vāyu, and that such manifestations reflect their source—‘as in the root, so in the expression’.

Seek knowledge that leads to inner purification and devotion—verify teachings by their alignment with dharma and by whether they point back to the highest source (mūla) of truth.
