Vāta-vyādhi Nidāna and Lakṣaṇa: Obstruction, Dhātu-Seating, and Major Neuromuscular Entities
आमबद्धायनः कुर्यात्संस्तभ्याङ्गं कफान्वितः / असाध्य एव सर्वो हि भवेद्दण्डापतानकः
āmabaddhāyanaḥ kuryātsaṃstabhyāṅgaṃ kaphānvitaḥ / asādhya eva sarvo hi bhaveddaṇḍāpatānakaḥ
When the channels (āyana) are obstructed by āma and accompanied by kapha, it causes stiffness by arresting the limbs. Indeed, daṇḍāpatānaka is entirely incurable.
Lord Vishnu (teaching Garuda)
Dosha: Kapha
Concept: Āma-obstructed channels with kapha involvement cause limb arrest and stiffness; daṇḍāpatānaka is wholly asādhya.
Vedantic Theme: Srotas-āvaraṇa as bondage metaphor: obstruction produces loss of freedom of movement; embodied limitation is intrinsic to prakṛti.
Application: Treat early āma and kapha to prevent srotorodha and stambha; once daṇḍāpatānaka manifests, focus on comfort care and supportive measures.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: karuna

The verse treats āma as a root cause that blocks bodily pathways, leading to severe stiffness and serious disease progression, especially when kapha is involved.
It does not narrate afterlife events; it emphasizes bodily obstruction and incurability as a caution to maintain health, which supports one’s dharmic duties in life.
Avoid habits that create āma (heavy, incompatible foods; overeating; weak digestion) and address kapha aggravation early to prevent chronic stiffness and complications.
