Like a great mountain, the Lord stood as the shelter of all moving and nonmoving beings. He is the friend of the serpents, for Ananta-Śeṣa is His companion and servant. As a mountain bears thousands of golden peaks, so were seen Ananta’s hoods crowned with gold; and as a mountain holds jewels, His transcendental body was filled with precious gems. In the waters of cosmic devastation, He is sometimes seen submerged.
This verse describes Bhagavān manifesting from within the waters, revealing His cosmic, mountain-like form as the shelter of all beings—signifying His transcendence and His role as the source and support of creation.
The Kaustubha jewel is a distinctive mark of Viṣṇu’s supreme divinity; its mention emphasizes that the appearing form is not ordinary but the fully opulent Personality of Godhead.
Use the imagery for meditation: remember the Lord as the inner support of all life, and cultivate steadiness in bhakti by contemplating His protective presence even when He seems “hidden,” like within the waters.
