Diti’s Untimely Desire and the Birth-Cause of the Asura Line
Prelude to Hiranyākṣa–Varāha
मैत्रेय उवाच स्वसर्गस्याशिषं लोक्यामाशासानां प्रवेपतीम् । निवृत्तसन्ध्यानियमो भार्यामाह प्रजापति: ॥ ३७ ॥
maitreya uvāca sva-sargasyāśiṣaṁ lokyām āśāsānāṁ pravepatīm nivṛtta-sandhyā-niyamo bhāryām āha prajāpatiḥ
Maitreya said: Prajāpati Kaśyapa thus spoke to his wife, who trembled in fear that she had offended her husband. Though she knew she had drawn him away from his evening prayers, she still longed for the worldly welfare of her children.
This verse notes that Kashyapa set aside his sandhyā observance, highlighting how strong worldly impulses can disrupt daily dharmic disciplines and lead into consequential actions in the narrative.
He saw Diti trembling with intense worldly desire for a boon related to offspring, so he addressed her—setting the stage for the moral and karmic consequences described in this chapter.
It warns that when desire becomes urgent, we may compromise regular spiritual practice; maintaining steady daily discipline helps keep decisions aligned with dharma.
