Brahmā’s Creation: The Kumāras, Rudra, the Prajāpatis, and the Manifestation of Vedic Sound
स वै रुरोद देवानां पूर्वजो भगवान् भव: । नामानि कुरु मे धात: स्थानानि च जगद्गुरो ॥ ८ ॥
sa vai ruroda devānāṁ pūrvajo bhagavān bhavaḥ nāmāni kuru me dhātaḥ sthānāni ca jagad-guro
As soon as he was born he began to cry. Bhagavān Bhava, the forefather of the gods, said: “O maker of destiny, teacher of the universe, appoint my names and my abode.”
In this creation context, Rudra’s intense emotion indicates the powerful, turbulent nature of his manifested role; he then seeks Brahmā’s guidance to be properly situated with names and abodes within cosmic order.
Because Brahmā, as Dhātā and jagad-guru for the created universe, assigns functions, designations, and domains to newly manifested beings; Rudra requests clear identity and jurisdiction to serve his appointed duty.
Even great powers require guidance and proper engagement; seeking rightful identity, boundaries, and duty from legitimate spiritual authority helps channel intense energy into purposeful service rather than confusion.
