When the young gopīs heard that Akrūra had come to Vraja to take Rāma and Kṛṣṇa to the city, they became intensely distressed.
Because they heard Akrūra had arrived to take Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa from Vraja to the city (Mathurā), and the thought of separation from Kṛṣṇa caused them intense anguish.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī is narrating to King Parīkṣit, describing the gopīs’ reaction upon hearing the news of Kṛṣṇa’s departure.
Their pain shows the depth of loving attachment to God; a devotee can cultivate steady remembrance and sincere longing for Kṛṣṇa, turning separation into intensified devotion rather than distraction.
