Escorting/following a route is not an offense in the case of itinerant groups and occupations—such as performers/itinerants, bards/roamers, fishermen, hunters, cowherds, and tavern-keepers—and likewise for other women who are socially ‘unrestricted’ (prasṛṣṭa-strī), i.e., not under exclusive guardianship.
Rule-by-category: the text creates occupational and status-based exceptions to avoid over-criminalizing normal mobility patterns.
