The Sun’s Chariot and the Sevenfold Monthly Governors
Speaker: Parasara
Topic: Solar attendants and the appointed deities/retinues for the Sun’s monthly course (ādityamaṇḍala-adhikāriṇaḥ).
Teaching: Cosmological
Quality: authoritative
Cosmic Hierarchy: Lokas
Concept: Time and seasons operate through divinely appointed functionaries in the solar orb, expressing an ordered cosmic governance.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Cultivate reverence for ritucaryā (seasonal discipline) and align worship and conduct with time’s sacred rhythms.
Vishishtadvaita: Cosmic order is not impersonal: it is administered through dependent beings under the Lord’s sovereignty, implying a governed universe rather than a self-sufficient mechanism.
Vishnu Form: Narayana
Bhakti Type: Shanta
This verse presents the cosmos as an ordered administration of time: the Sun’s monthly movement is accompanied by specific beings, showing regulated cosmic governance rather than randomness.
Parāśara describes fixed assignments—names of deities, sages, and celestial beings—who ‘attend’ the Sun in particular months, mapping time (kāla) into a structured sacred calendar.
Even when Vishnu is not named in the verse, the Purāṇic framework treats such cosmic regularity as proceeding from the Supreme Reality—Vishnu—whose sovereignty sustains the lawful rhythm of the universe.
