Vāsudeva’s Nature and the Ordered Process of Creation
Speaker: Parasara
Topic: How the evolutes arise from the threefold ahaṃkāra and how tanmātras/bhūtas proceed
Teaching: Cosmological
Quality: authoritative
Creation Stage: Primary
Concept: From tāmasa-ahaṃkāra proceeds the specific evolution of tanmātras and bhūtas, whose character is determined by their causal guṇa.
Vedantic Theme: Maya
Application: Use guṇa-analysis to discern how perceptions and material tendencies arise, supporting vairāgya and self-regulation.
Vishishtadvaita: Material evolutes arise under the Lord’s governance as His śarīra (dependent prakṛti), while He remains the inner ruler beyond guṇas.
Vishnu Form: Para-Brahman
Jagat Karana: Yes
This verse states that the tamasic form of ahaṃkāra specifically generates the tanmātras and the bhūtas, marking the transition from inner principle to material manifestation.
In Parāśara’s step-by-step cosmology taught to Maitreya, the elements do not appear randomly; they emerge in an ordered sequence, and here he identifies their immediate cause as the tamasic ego-principle.
Even while describing tattvas like ahaṃkāra and the elements, the Vishnu Purana frames the entire sarga as operating under the Supreme Reality—Vishnu—whose governance makes cosmic evolution intelligible and ordered.
