Departure to the Battlefield and the Śaiva Overlordship over the Devas
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Liṅgodbhava
Sthala Purana: Continuing the dispute: Viṣṇu, accepting Brahmā’s claim as true, offers him honor with ṣoḍaśopacāra—showing how māyā can mislead even exalted beings when the Lord’s concealment operates.
Significance: Highlights dharma of humility and honoring perceived truth, while foreshadowing that only Śiva’s revelation resolves delusion.
Offering: pushpa
Cosmic Event: Cosmic contest under tirodhāna: truth appears established by false witness until divine intervention.
It highlights humility and reverence for cosmic order: even Hari accepts truth and honors the ordained role of Brahmā, modeling disciplined devotion that supports dharma and prepares the mind for higher Shaiva realization.
The verse emphasizes formal worship through prescribed upacāras; in Shaiva practice the same shodashopachāra framework is applied to Saguna Shiva—especially the Śiva-liṅga—where ritual honor becomes a vehicle for inner surrender to Pati (Shiva) beyond forms.
Shodashopachāra pūjā (sixteen offerings) performed with contemplation of truth and humility; as a takeaway, one may worship Shiva with orderly offerings while mentally repeating a Shaiva mantra such as “Om Namaḥ Śivāya.”
