Śivakṣetra–Tīrtha–Māhātmya
The Salvific Function of Shiva’s Sacred Domains

Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: In the Viśveśvara/Kāśī frame, Gaṅgā-snāna and pitṛ-kriyā at Kāśī are praised as exceptionally efficacious because the kṣetra is held to be Śiva’s own abode where liberation is facilitated; offerings made with Gaṅgā-water are treated as directly reaching the pitṛs and purifying the doer for Śiva’s grace.
Significance: Gaṅgā-related śrāddha/piṇḍadāna/tilodaka in Māgha and at Kumbha-saṅkrānti is presented as a high-merit purifier that supports pitṛ-tarpaṇa and the aspirant’s eligibility for Śiva-anugraha.
Role: nurturing
Offering: naivedya
Cosmic Event: Māgha month observances; Sun’s ingress/placement in Kumbha (Aquarius) as an auspicious solar transit
It highlights the exceptional sanctity of Gaṅgā during Māgha and Kumbha-related solar timing, teaching that ancestral rites and libations performed then carry intensified purificatory power, aiding spiritual upliftment under Śiva’s auspicious order (dharma).
By praising tirtha-based rites, the verse supports the Shaiva view that outer sacred acts (karma) can prepare the devotee for deeper devotion to Saguna Śiva—often expressed through Linga worship—by cleansing impurities and strengthening faith.
Perform Māgha-snāna in Gaṅgā and offer tilodaka, śrāddha, or piṇḍadāna with purity and Śiva-bhakti; one may also mentally dedicate the act to Śiva while reciting the Panchakshara, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” as an inner offering.
