Inquiry into the Ten Principal Śaiva Vratas
Suta Goswami (narrating the prescribed ritual procedure to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: Visarjana at dawn marks the controlled withdrawal of invoked presence—ritual concealment/closure (tirodhāna) followed by renewed, rule-bound worship, emphasizing discipline and purity in approaching Śiva.
It emphasizes disciplined devotion: worship is not only invocation and offering, but also proper completion (visarjana) at the right time, reflecting reverence for Shiva’s sacred presence and the order of dharma.
In Saguna worship of Shiva as the Linga, rites often include invocation/establishment and a concluding dismissal; this verse highlights that the devotee should conclude respectfully at dawn and then continue worship following the authorized procedure.
Perform visarjana at the fourth yāma (dawn), then repeat the essential preliminaries (prayoga-ādi—such as saṅkalpa, ācamana, nyāsa/mantra-setup as applicable) and proceed with vidhivat Shiva-pūjā.
