Bhaimaśaṅkara-māhātmya: Śiva’s Descent in Kāmarūpa and the Rise of Bhīma
Bhima
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Jyotirlinga: Bhīmaśaṃkara
Sthala Purana: Bhīma’s demand to know his father and his mother’s condition initiates the backstory that will explain his later hostility and the eventual need for Śiva’s decisive protection at Bhīmāśaṅkara.
Significance: Highlights the theme that mere factual knowledge without dharmic orientation remains under tirodhāna; pilgrims seek right knowledge (sadvidyā) culminating in Śiva’s anugraha.
Role: teaching
The verse highlights satya (truth) and sincere inquiry as a dharmic starting point—before one can progress toward Shiva’s grace, confusion about identity, duty, and suffering is brought into the light and addressed honestly.
In the Kotirudra Saṃhitā’s Jyotirliṅga-oriented narrative world, personal crisis and questions of fate often become the doorway to seeking Saguna Shiva through pilgrimage and liṅga-worship—approaching Shiva as the compassionate revealer of truth and remover of inner darkness.
The immediate takeaway is truthful self-examination (svādhyāya) and prayerful inquiry; a Shaiva practice aligned with this mood is steady japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” to calm the mind and invite clarity before taking vows, pilgrimage, or liṅga-pūjā.
