The Determination of Śiva as the Meaning of Praṇava
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadyojāta
The verse teaches reverence and humility: a Brāhmaṇa guest is honored as embodying the divine collective (Viśvedevas), and offering a pure darbha seat becomes an act of dharma that purifies the mind and supports devotion (bhakti) aligned with Shaiva Siddhanta ethics.
In Saguna Shiva worship, outer acts of purity and hospitality train inner surrender. Respecting a sacred guest as divine complements Linga-puja by cultivating the same attitude of seeing Shiva’s presence in worthy embodiments and maintaining ritual sanctity.
It points to traditional ritual purity using darbha: preparing a darbha seat (āsana) and holding darbha for sanctification during rites—practices commonly paired with mantra-japa and puja as a disciplined, sattvic preparation.
