so ’vatīrya drumāt tasmād vidruma-pratimānanaḥ | vinīta-veṣaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ praṇipatya upasṛtya ca || tām abravīn mahātejā hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ | śirasy añjalim ādhāya sītāṃ madhurayā girā ||
Hanuman, son of the Wind-god whose face shone like coral, dressed in a sober manner climbed down the tree, went close to Sita, offered salutations with his palms on his head and spoke in sweet words:
Dharma here is maryādā (proper conduct): Hanuman approaches a distressed, guarded woman with humility, reverence, and self-restraint, minimizing fear and honoring her dignity.
After observing Sita from concealment, Hanuman climbs down and formally approaches her to begin communication.
Hanuman’s vinaya (humility) and tact—he chooses respectful gestures and gentle speech to build trust.
