Hanumān’s Survey of Rāvaṇa’s Inner Palace and Banquet Hall
अङ्गनानां सहस्रेण भूषितेन विभूषणैः।।5.11.6।।रूपसल्लापशीलेन युक्तगीतार्थभाषिणा।देशकालाभियुक्तेन युक्तवाक्याभिधायिना।।5.11.7।।रताभिरतसंसुप्तं ददर्श हरियूथपः।
aṅganānāṃ sahasreṇa bhūṣitena vibhūṣaṇaiḥ || 5.11.6 ||
rūpasallāpaśīlena yuktagītārthabhāṣiṇā |
deśakālābhiyuktena yuktavākyābhidhāyinā || 5.11.7 ||
ratābhiratasaṃsuptaṃ dadarśa hariyūthapaḥ |
Der Anführer der Affen sah Tausende von Frauen, mit Schmuck geziert: kundig in anmutiger Rede, bewandert im Sinn der Lieder, achtsam dessen, was Zeit und Ort geziemt, und geschickt im passenden Wort; nun schliefen sie, nach langem Rausch der Lust erschöpft.
'One has to search a creature among its own species. It is not possible to find a lost woman in the herd of female deer'.
Dharma here is conveyed by contrast: refinement and accomplishment without restraint can still culminate in heedlessness; Hanuman’s dharma is to remain unaffected and continue his righteous mission.
Hanuman surveys the luxurious inner chambers and observes the sleeping women, noting their adornment and cultured qualities.
Self-control (saṃyama) and moral clarity—Hanuman witnesses sensuality but does not become entangled in it.
