Tara’s Counsel to Vali on Sugriva’s Roar and Rama’s Alliance
श्रुत्वा तु तस्य निनदं सर्वभूतप्रकम्पनम्।मदश्चैकपदे नष्टः क्रोधश्चापतितो महान्।।
śrutvā tu tasya ninadaṃ sarvabhūtaprakampanam | madaś caikapade naṣṭaḥ krodhaś cāpatito mahān ||
Als er jenes Dröhnen hörte, das alle Wesen erzittern ließ, verging sein Hochmut auf der Stelle, und großer Zorn stürzte über ihn.
The roar (of Sugriva) that frightened all beings gave Vali's vanity a jolt and at once aroused in him violent rage.
Unchecked anger clouds dharma: the verse shows how sudden rage can replace reason, pushing one toward harmful action.
Sugrīva’s thunderous challenge is heard; Vāli’s emotional state shifts immediately into intense anger.
By contrast, the need for self-control (dama): the verse highlights the danger when it is absent.
