शुक्लपक्षस्य पूर्वाह्णे प्रशस्ते चोत्तरायणे । गत्वारण्यं नियमवांस्तपः कुर्यात्समाहितः

śuklapakṣasya pūrvāhṇe praśaste cottarāyaṇe | gatvāraṇyaṃ niyamavāṃstapaḥ kuryātsamāhitaḥ

Am Vormittag der lichten Monatshälfte, zu günstiger Zeit und während des Uttarāyaṇa (des nordwärts gerichteten Sonnenlaufs), soll er in den Wald gehen und, in Gelübden gefestigt, mit gesammelt ruhendem Geist Askese (tapas) üben.
