Concept: Give from surplus after meeting family necessities; otherwise the act loses its rightful character and does not yield spiritual fruit.

Application: Set a stable giving budget after essentials (food, clothing, dependents) are secured; avoid performative generosity that creates debt, resentment, or neglect.

FAQs

It teaches that charity should be offered from surplus—after meeting essential household needs—so that giving is sustainable and aligned with dharma.

Because giving in a way that neglects basic responsibilities (like family sustenance) is portrayed as improper dāna and therefore not conducive to spiritual merit.

Balance generosity with duty: fulfill essential obligations first, then give from what remains, ensuring both care for dependents and meaningful charity.
