Concept: Aśauca (impurity) restricts certain acts; one must restore fitness before engaging in śruti-recitation, bathing rites, eating, or resting—especially under sacred witnesses.

Application: When unclean (after certain bodily functions, contact, or before prescribed cleansing), pause routine acts; perform proper ācamana/śauca first; be mindful of posture and direction during daily rituals.

Primary Rasa: bhayanaka

Secondary Rasa: shanta

FAQs

The verse lists five actions to avoid while impure: lying down (śayana), drinking (pāna), sacred recitation or self-study (svādhyāya), bathing (snāna), and eating (bhojana).

These are treated as revered presences or directions associated with sanctity and social-religious order; the verse advises heightened restraint and decorum in states of impurity when near such presences.

It emphasizes self-discipline and reverence—aligning personal conduct with context, purity norms, and respect for sacred forces and honored persons.
