Account of Kāmākṣā (Bhavānī) at Āhicchatrā

FAQs

It condemns fleeing from battle and mocks false claims to heroism, arguing that when cowards dominate warfare, the ethical code (samaya) of true warriors cannot survive.

Here “samayaḥ” means an accepted code or standard of conduct—especially the honor-bound conventions expected of śūras (the brave), such as courage, keeping one’s word, and not abandoning duty.

It is a rhetorical, ironic identification: calling him “great hero” while stating he fled intensifies the shame and highlights the contrast between reputation and conduct.
