Account of the Ripening of Karma

Childlessness, Offspring, and Remedial Dharma

gaurīṃ kanyāṃ tathā dehi purāṇaśravaṇaṃ kuru | putro vai jāyate tatra sarvapātakanāśanam

FAQs

It recommends Purāṇa-śravaṇa (hearing sacred Purāṇic teachings) and the meritorious act of giving a maiden in marriage (kanyā-dāna), presenting both as spiritually fruitful.

It describes the resulting son as “one who destroys all sins,” i.e., a highly purifying, virtuous offspring whose presence and conduct are portrayed as expiatory.

The verse links dharmic action and sacred listening with auspicious outcomes, emphasizing that religious learning (śravaṇa) and socially sanctioned generosity (dāna) are valued as means to cultivate virtue and wellbeing.
