The Glory of the Divine Name and the Doctrine of Name-Offenses

Nāma-aparādha

Uncertain (chapter-level dialogue context not provided in the input; commonly framed within Purāṇic instruction on nāma-aparādha)

Concept: Guru-avajñā, śruti-śāstra-nindā, and speculative reinterpretation of Hari-nāma constitute nāmāparādha; such a person lacks true sin-awareness and is not purified by ordinary yamas/expiations.

Application: Maintain humility toward teachers; avoid mocking scripture; do not ‘explain away’ sacred practice as mere psychology; when doubts arise, seek śāstra-grounded guidance rather than cynical rationalization.

Primary Rasa: raudra

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A stern, luminous sage points toward a scroll of śruti while a wavering figure in the foreground tears at manuscripts and gestures in argumentative pride. Behind the sage, Hari-nāma appears as a blazing, untouchable flame-lettering, while the proud figure’s shadow lengthens downward, symbolizing the fall caused by offense.","primary_figures":["authoritative sage-teacher","errant disputant","personified śruti-śāstra as radiant manuscripts","Hari-nāma as flame-script"],"setting":"teaching hall of an āśrama with manuscript shelves, a small altar with śaṅkha-cakra symbols","lighting_mood":"lamp-lit with sharp divine highlights","color_palette":["lamp gold","ink black","manuscript ochre","crimson","deep teal"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: a commanding sage with gold-leaf halo admonishing a proud disputant; śruti manuscripts rendered with raised gold borders; Hari-nāma as fiery gold calligraphy above an altar with śaṅkha-cakra; rich reds/greens, ornate pillars, dramatic moral contrast.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate indoor scene with manuscript shelves, a sage calmly but firmly instructing; the disputant shown with tense posture; subtle glowing script of ‘Hari’ in the air; delicate lines, restrained palette, psychological nuance.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines, high-contrast expressions—sage as dharma-guardian, disputant as restless; manuscripts stylized as patterned rectangles; golden flame-script of nāma above; red-yellow-green pigments with deep blue background.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: symbolic composition—central altar with nāma-flame medallion, sages on one side, the argumentative figure on the other; ornate floral borders, lotus motifs, deep blue cloth with gold highlights emphasizing sacred authority."}

FAQs

It lists serious forms of nāma-aparādha—disrespecting the guru, criticizing śruti/śāstra, and concocting or rationalizing meanings of Hari’s name—and stresses that such offenses dull moral awareness, making ordinary expiations ineffective.

The verse implies that nāma-aparādha damages the very conscience (pāpa-buddhi) that would motivate repentance; without that inner recognition, external disciplines alone cannot bring genuine purification.

Maintain humility and fidelity: honor the guru, refrain from disparaging sacred revelation and scripture, and approach the divine name with reverence rather than speculative invention or self-serving interpretation.
