Kṛpa–Arjuna Chariot Engagement
भीष्म उवाच अत्र या मामिका बुद्धि: श्रूयतां यदि रोचते । सर्वथा हि मया श्रेयो वक्तव्यं कुरुनन्दन,भीष्मने कहा--कुरुनन्दन! यदि तुम्हें जचे, तो इस विषयमें मेरी जो सलाह है, उसे सुनो। मैं सर्वया कल्याणकी ही बात कहूँगा
bhīṣma uvāca | atra yā māmakī buddhiḥ śrūyatāṃ yadi rocate | sarvathā hi mayā śreyo vaktavyaṃ kurunandana ||
Bhīṣma sagte: „Wenn es dir gefällt, o Freude der Kurus, so höre den Rat, der in dieser Sache der meine ist. Denn in jeder Hinsicht werde ich nur das aussprechen, was wahrhaft zu deinem Wohl ist.“
भीष्म उवाच
A counselor should speak with the listener’s consent and aim solely at śreyas—true welfare—rather than personal gain, flattery, or expediency.
Bhishma signals that he is about to offer guidance on the issue at hand, asking the Kuru prince to hear his opinion and assuring him that his words will be for the prince’s benefit.
