Virāṭa-parva, Adhyāya 12 — Concealed Service in Matsya and Bhīma’s Arena Victory

evaṁ hi matsye nyavasan pāṇḍavā yathā-pratijñābhir amogha-darśanāḥ | ajñāta-caryā vyacaran samāhitāḥ samudra-nemī-patayo 'ti-duḥkhitāḥ ||

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharma as fidelity to one’s pledged word: even rightful rulers must accept hardship and maintain mental discipline to fulfill a vow. Ethical strength is shown not by power, but by steadfast restraint and endurance under suffering.

After completing the forest exile, the Pāṇḍavas spend the required final year living incognito in the Matsya kingdom. They carefully conceal their identities, remain composed and vigilant, and endure great distress despite being true sovereigns by right.
