Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how victory-craving (jayagṛddhi) and rivalry can escalate conflict, even among highly trained warriors. It implicitly frames martial skill—especially mastery of divyāstras—as ethically double-edged: power and expertise intensify the consequences when driven by competitive passion rather than restraint.

Mārkaṇḍeya describes that a tremendous, fierce battle breaks out between two opponents. Both are eager to win, both know divine weapons, and their mutual competitiveness fuels an intense confrontation.
