Educational Q&A

The verse models dhārmic inquiry: a ruler (Janamejaya) seeks a clear account of actions taken during the Pāṇḍavas’ vulnerable period of exile, highlighting that ethical evaluation in the epic depends on understanding conduct in context—especially how power is used when opponents are disadvantaged.

Janamejaya asks the narrator-sage to describe what the Kauravas did while the Pāṇḍavas were living in the forest. This question functions as a transition into the next sequence of events centered on Kaurava initiatives during the exile period.
