Draupadī’s Rebuke of Jayadratha and Dhaumya’s Admonition (Āraṇyaka-parva, Adhyāya 252)

आह्वानाय तदा चक्कु: कर्म वैतानसम्भवम्‌ । बृहस्पत्युशनोक्तैश्न मन्त्रैर्मन्त्रविशारदा:

āhvānāya tadā cakkuḥ karma vaitānasambhavam | bṛhaspatyuśanoktaiś ca mantrair mantraviśāradāḥ ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana sprach: Daraufhin unternahmen jene, die in den Mantras bewandert waren, um ihn herbeizurufen, einen Vaitāna-Ritus (atharvavedisch), ein Werk ritueller Vollziehung, und gebrauchten die Sprüche, die Bṛhaspati und Uśanas (Śukrācārya) gelehrt hatten. Im Zusammenhang der Erzählung greifen die unterirdischen Daiteyas und Dānavas, aus Furcht, Duryodhanas Tod könne ihre eigene Sache zugrunde richten, zu mächtigen Opfer- und Mantra-Verfahren, um ihn an sich zu ziehen—und zeigen damit, wie Eigennutz selbst gelehrte Ritualhandlung auf ethisch fragwürdige Ziele hin treiben kann.
