Draupadī’s Rebuke of Jayadratha and Dhaumya’s Admonition (Āraṇyaka-parva, Adhyāya 252)

Educational Q&A

The passage contrasts proper reverence toward elders and teachers with the ethical danger of obstinate resolve driven by anger. It shows how a vow-like act (fasting) can become morally distorted when used as coercion or self-assertion rather than as disciplined dharma.

After hearing advice from his well-wishers, Duryodhana becomes angry and dismisses them, insisting he needs neither dharma nor worldly goods and declaring an unwavering decision to fast unto death. He orders them to return to the city and continue honoring his elders and teachers there.
