ततो5स्मि पतितो भूमौ न च मामजहात् स्मृति: स्मार्तमस्ति पुराणं मे यथैवाधिगतं तथा,“उनके इतना कहते ही मैं पृथ्वीपर गिर पड़ा। परंतु आज भी वह पुरानी स्मरण-शक्ति मुझे छोड़ नहीं सकी है। यद्यपि यह वृत्तान्त बहुत पुराना हो चुका है तथापि जो कुछ जैसे हुआ था; वह सब मुझे ज्यों-का-त्यों स्मरण है
tato ’smi patito bhūmau na ca mām ajahāt smṛtiḥ | smārtam asti purāṇaṃ me yathaivādhigataṃ tathā ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: „Sobald er so geredet hatte, stürzte ich zu Boden. Doch meine Erinnerungskraft verließ mich nicht. Obgleich dieser Bericht uralt ist, bleibt alles, was geschah — so, wie es erlebt wurde — in meinem Gedächtnis gegenwärtig.“
