भरद्वाजपुत्रवधः
The Slaying of Bharadvāja’s Son and the Sage’s Lament
लोगमश उवाच विलप्यैवं बहुविधं भरद्वाजो5दहत् सुतम् । सुसमिद्धं ततः पश्चात् प्रविवेश हुताशनम्
Lomāśa uvāca: vilapyaivaṁ bahuvidhaṁ Bharadvājo ’dahat sutam | susamiddhaṁ tataḥ paścāt praviveśa hutāśanam ||
Lomāśa sprach: Nachdem Bharadvāja so auf vielerlei Weise geklagt hatte, übergab er seinen Sohn dem Feuer. Dann, als der Scheiterhaufen voll entbrannt war, trat er selbst in das heilige Feuer ein.
लोगमश उवाच
The verse highlights how intense grief can drive a person to extreme, irreversible actions. In dharma-oriented narrative, it serves as a caution that sorrow, if unchecked by discernment and self-control, can eclipse one’s duties and lead to self-destruction.
Lomāśa narrates that the sage Bharadvāja, after lamenting repeatedly, cremated his son. When the funeral fire was blazing, Bharadvāja then entered the fire himself.
