Vaiśampāyana said: “Our army is indeed complete in every respect; yet I believe that, when it comes to facing the Pāṇḍavas, it will prove as good as nothing. Among them stands one mighty warrior here—Dhṛṣṭadyumna—alone on the Pāṇḍavas’ side, a forceful champion. And this, too, is the highest light in the world of living beings: the protection of the livelihood granted to Brāhmaṇas—an ordinance established by the Creator for the welfare of the people, spreading pure renown. If the dull-witted Kauravas, driven by greed, do not restrain the fault of seizing that Brāhmaṇa livelihood, then total destruction will befall the Kaurava line.”

Educational Q&A

Moral power and dharma outweigh mere numerical or material completeness: violating dharma—especially the protection of Brāhmaṇas’ rightful livelihood—creates a decisive fault that leads to collective ruin. Greed that refuses self-restraint becomes the cause of a dynasty’s destruction.

In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a warning is voiced: despite the Kauravas’ seemingly complete army, the Pāṇḍavas possess formidable champions such as Dhṛṣṭadyumna. Alongside this military assessment, the speaker frames the conflict in ethical terms, cautioning that Kaurava wrongdoing—specifically, failing to restrain the sin of appropriating Brāhmaṇas’ means of living—will bring total catastrophe upon them.
