Decision on Command and the Pandavas’ March to Kurukshetra

punarbhedaś ca me yukto yadā sāma na gṛhyate | karmānukīrtanaṃ caiva devamānuṣasaṃhitam ||

Educational Q&A

When peaceful persuasion (sāma) fails, one may shift to another political strategy (here, bheda—creating divisions), while still grounding one’s argument in ethical exemplars by highlighting the righteous deeds of the virtuous (the Pāṇḍavas).

Vāyudeva explains his change of approach: since conciliation was not accepted, he adopted a divisive tactic and repeatedly described the Pāṇḍavas’ godlike and noble human actions to influence attitudes and decisions.
