ब्रह्माजीके पुत्र भूतनाथ श्रीकण्ठ उमापति भगवान्‌ शिवने शान्तचित्त होकर पाशुपतज्ञानका उपदेश किया है ।। पाउचरात्रस्य कृत्स्नस्य वेत्ता तु भगवान्‌ स्वयम्‌ । सर्वेषु च नृपश्रेष्ठ ज्ञानेष्वेतेषु दृश्यते,नृपश्रेष्ठ! सम्पूर्ण पाउचरात्रके ज्ञाता तो साक्षात्‌ भगवान्‌ नारायण ही हैं। यदि वेदशास्त्र और अनुभवके अनुसार विचार किया जाय तो इन सभी ज्ञानोंमें इनके परम तात्पर्यरूपसे भगवान्‌ नारायण ही स्थित दिखायी देते हैं। प्रजानाथ! जो अज्ञानमें डूबे हुए हैं, वे लोग भगवान्‌ श्रीहरिको इस रूपमें नहीं जानते हैं

Vaiśampāyana uvāca | Pañcarātrasya kṛtsnasya vettā tu bhagavān svayam | sarveṣu ca nṛpaśreṣṭha jñāneṣv eteṣu dṛśyate || nṛpaśreṣṭha! sampūrṇa-pañcarātrasya jñātā tu sākṣād bhagavān Nārāyaṇa eva | yadi vedaśāstra-anubhava-anusāreṇa vicāryate, tarhi sarveṣu jñāneṣv eteṣu paramatātparyarūpeṇa bhagavān Nārāyaṇa eva sthita iti dṛśyate | prajānātha! ye ajñāne nimagnāḥ, te bhagavantaṃ Śrīhariṃ etasmin rūpe na jānanti ||

Vaiśampāyana sprach: „O Bester der Könige, der erhabene Śiva—als Sohn Brahmās bezeichnet, Umāpati, Bhūtanātha und Śrīkaṇṭha—hat mit friedvollem Geist das Pāśupata-Wissen gelehrt. Und, o vornehmster Herrscher, der vollkommene Kenner des gesamten Pañcarātra ist der Herr Nārāyaṇa selbst. Prüft man nach Veda, Śāstra und Erfahrung, so zeigt sich, dass in all diesen Wissenswegen der höchste Sinn zuletzt auf Nārāyaṇa weist. O Herr des Volkes, wer in Unwissen versunken ist, erkennt Śrī Hari in dieser wahren, gipfelnden Gestalt nicht.“
