Atithi-satkāra and the Consolation of Wise Counsel (अतिथिसत्कारः प्रज्ञानवचनस्य च पराश्वासनम्)
हिमवतो. गिरे्दुहितरमुमां कन््यां रुद्रश्नकमे भूगुपि च महर्षिहिमवन्तमागत्याब्रवीत् कन्यामिमां मे देहीति तमब्रवीद्धिमवानभिलक्षितो वरो रुद्र इति तमब्रवीद् भुगुर्यस्मात् त्वयाहं कन्यावरण-कृतभाव: प्रत्याख्यातस्तस्मान्न रत्नानां भवान् भाजनं भविष्यतीति,हिमवानकी पुत्री उमाको जब वह कुमारी अवस्थामें थी तभी रुद्रने पानेकी इच्छा की। दूसरी ओरसे महर्षि भूगु भी वहाँ आकर हिमवानसे बोले--“अपनी यह कन्या मुझे दे दो।' तब हिमवानने उनसे कहा--“इस कन्याके लिये देख-सुनकर लक्षित किये हुए वर रुद्रदेव हैं।! तब भूगुने कहा--“मैं कन््याका वरण करनेकी भावना लेकर यहाँ आया था, किंतु तुमने मेरी उपेक्षा कर दी है; इसलिये मैं शाप देता हूँ कि तुम रत्नोंके भण्डार नहीं होओगे'
Himavato gireḥ duhitaraṃ Umāṃ kanyāṃ Rudraḥ śaṅkamaḥ bhūgūpi ca maharṣiḥ Himavantam āgatya abravīt—“kanyām imāṃ me dehī” iti. Tam abravīd Himavān—“abhilakṣito varaḥ Rudraḥ” iti. Tam abravīd Bhṛguḥ—“yasmāt tvayāhaṃ kanyā-varaṇa-kṛta-bhāvaḥ pratyākhyātaḥ, tasmān na ratnānāṃ bhavān bhājanaṃ bhaviṣyatī” iti.
When Umā, the daughter of Himavat, was still a maiden, Rudra desired to marry her. At the same time the great sage Bhṛgu also came to Himavat and said, “Give me this girl as my bride.” Himavat replied, “The chosen and intended bridegroom for her is Rudra.” Bhṛgu then said, “I came with the intention of seeking her hand, but you have rejected and slighted me; therefore I curse you: you shall not become a repository of jewels.” The episode highlights how disregard for a worthy petitioner—especially a sage—can invite consequences, and how marriage alliances are framed as matters of prior intention, propriety, and dharma.
