Adhyāya 270 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry on saṃnyāsa; Bhīṣma on calculable time, tamas, and karma

Vṛtra–Uśanā exemplum begins

तत्पश्चात्‌ उस श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणने अपने निकट अगल-बगलमें रखे हुए बहुत-से सूक्ष्म चीर (वल्कल आदि) देखे। इससे उसके मनमें बड़ा खेद एवं वैराग्य हुआ ।।

brāhmaṇa uvāca | ayaṁ na sukṛtaṁ vetti ko nv anyo vetsyate kṛtam | gacchāmi vanam evāhaṁ varaṁ dharmeṇa jīvitum ||

Daraufhin sah jener vortreffliche Brahmane in seiner Nähe, zu beiden Seiten, viele feine Gewänder—wie Rindenkleider (valkala) und andere Tücher—bereitgelegt. Bei diesem Anblick ergriff ihn tiefer Kummer und Entsagung. Der Brahmane sprach bei sich: „Wenn er das Verdienst des Getanen nicht erkennt, wer sonst wird diese Tat verstehen? Ich will in den Wald gehen—besser ist es, nach dem Dharma zu leben.“ So, von Reue und Weltentsagung überwältigt, beschloss er, jede weltliche Erwartung hinter sich zu lassen und sich durch rechtschaffenes Leben zu erhalten.
