Daṇḍa, Ahiṃsā, and Proportional Kingship: The Dyumatsena–Satyavān Dialogue (दण्ड-अहिंसा-विवेकः)

इमानि हि प्राणयन्ति सृजन्त्युत्तारयन्ति च । न धर्म: परिपाठेन शक्‍्यो भारत वेदितुम्‌,भरतनन्दन! धर्म ही इन प्राणियोंकी सृष्टि करते हैं। धर्म ही उनके जीवनधारण और उद्धारमें कारण होते हैं; परंतु धर्मको केवल वेदोंके पाठमात्रसे नहीं जाना जा सकता

imāni hi prāṇayanti sṛjanti uttārayanti ca | na dharmaḥ paripāṭhena śakyo bhārata veditum ||

Yudhiṣṭhira sprach: „Wahrlich, es ist der Dharma, der diese Lebewesen erhält, sie hervorbringt und sie auch zur Befreiung geleitet. Doch, o Bhārata, Dharma lässt sich nicht allein durch bloßes Herunterbeten heiliger Texte erkennen.“
