Adhyāya 240: Indriya–Manas–Buddhi–Ātman — The Inner Hierarchy and Restraint (इन्द्रिय-मनस्-बुद्धि-आत्म-क्रमः)

सत्त्वसंसेवनाद धीरो निद्रामुच्छेत्तुमरहति । विद्वानोंने योगके जो काम

sattvasaṃsevanād dhīro nidrām ucchettum arhati | vidvān yoge ye kāma-krodha-lobha-bhayaṃ ca pañcamaṃ svapnam—ime pañca doṣāḥ proktās teṣāṃ pūrṇatayā ucchedaṃ kuryāt | teṣu krodhaṃ śamena (manonigrahena) jayet, kāmaṃ saṅkalpatyāgena parājayet; tathā dhīraḥ sattvaguṇasaṃsevanena nidrāyā ucchedaṃ kartum śaknoti ||

Vyāsa sprach: Durch die Pflege der Sattva-Qualität wird der Standhafte fähig, den Schlaf abzuschneiden. Die Weisen erklären, dass es in der Disziplin des Yoga fünf Fehler gibt—Begierde, Zorn, Gier, Furcht und als fünfter das Träumen—und man soll sie vollständig ausrotten. Dabei wird der Zorn durch ruhige Selbstzucht bezwungen; die Begierde wird besiegt, indem man zwanghafte Entschlüsse aufgibt; und durch beständiges Sich-Stützen auf Sattva kann der Entschlossene den Schlaf selbst überwinden.
