Yoga-kṛtya (योककृत्य) — Vyāsa on Sense-Restraint, Obstacles, and Brahman-Realization

उपलकभ्याप्सु चेद्‌ गन्धं केचिद्‌ ब्रूयुरनैपुणात्‌ । पृथिव्यामेव तं॑ विद्यादपां वायोश्व संश्रितम्‌,यदि कुछ मनुष्य जलमें गन्ध पाकर अयोग्यतावश यह कहने लगें कि यह जलका ही गुण है तो उनका वह कथन मिथ्या होगा; क्योंकि गन्ध वास्तवमें पृथ्वीका गुण है; अतः उसे पृथ्वीमें ही स्थित जानना चाहिये। जल और वायुमें तो वह आगन्तुककी भाँति स्थित होता है

upalabhyāpsu ced gandhaṁ kecid brūyur anaipuṇāt | pṛthivyām eva taṁ vidyād apāṁ vāyoś ca saṁśritam ||

Vyāsa sprach: Wenn manche, weil ihnen die Unterscheidungskraft fehlt, beim Wahrnehmen von Duft im Wasser sagen: „Das ist eine Eigenschaft des Wassers“, so ist diese Aussage irrig. Duft gehört in Wahrheit der Erde; daher ist zu verstehen, dass er in der Erde seinen Sitz hat. Im Wasser und im Wind verweilt er nur als etwas Hinzugekommenes, gleichsam wie ein Gast.
