Jāpakānāṃ Gatiḥ — The Destinies of Japa-Practitioners (Śānti Parva 12.190)

सभी उपायोंसे लोभ और क्रोधको जीतना चाहिये। यही ज्ञानोंमें पवित्र ज्ञान है और यही आत्मसंयम है ।। वार्यो सर्वात्मना तौ हि श्रेयोघातार्थमुच्छितौ । नित्यं क्रोधाच्छियं रक्षेत्‌ तपो रक्षेच्च मत्सरात्‌

sarvaiḥ upāyaiḥ lobhaṁ ca krodhaṁ ca jetavyam | etad eva jñāneṣu pavitraṁ jñānam etad evātmasaṁyamaḥ || vāryau sarvātmanā tau hi śreyoghātārtham ucchitau | nityaṁ krodhāc chriyaṁ rakṣet tapo rakṣec ca matsarāt ||

Bharadvāja sprach: Mit allen nur möglichen Mitteln soll man Gier und Zorn besiegen. Dies ist das reinste Wissen unter allen Wissensarten, und dies allein ist wahre Selbstzucht. Wahrlich, diese beiden — Gier und Zorn — müssen mit dem ganzen Wesen verworfen werden, denn sie schlagen das höchste Heil nieder. Darum schütze man stets den Wohlstand vor dem Zorn und schütze die Askese (tapas) vor dem Neid.
