Adhyāya 178 — The courses of prāṇa-vāyu and the regulation of the bodily fire
Desire is sustained by saṅkalpa—mental resolve, imaginative assent, and repeated intention. By refusing to form or feed that resolve, one cuts desire at its root, leading to its dissolution.
Bhishma addresses Kāma as if it were a personified adversary within the mind. He declares that he has recognized its origin in saṅkalpa and vows to stop entertaining such intentions, thereby uprooting desire.
