असंतोषादिदोष-निरूपणम्

On the Faults of Discontent and the Discipline of Detachment

इस विषयमें पूर्वकालमें राजा जनककी कही हुई एक गाथाका लोग उल्लेख किया करते हैं। राजा जनक समस्त द्वद्धोंसे रहित और जीवन्मुक्त पुरुष थे। उन्होंने मोक्षस्वरूप परमात्मतत्त्वका साक्षात्कार कर लिया था। अनन्तं बत मे वित्तं यस्य मे नास्ति किंचन । मिथिलायां प्रदीप्तायां न मे दह्युति किंचन,(उनकी वह गाथा इस प्रकार है--) दूसरोंकी दृष्टिमें मेरे पास बहुत धन है; परंतु उसमेंसे कुछ भी मेरा नहीं है। सारी मिथिलामें आग लग जाय तो भी मेरा कुछ नहीं जलेगा

anantaṃ bata me vittaṃ yasya me nāsti kiṃcana | mithilāyāṃ pradīptāyāṃ na me dahyati kiṃcana ||

Man pflegt eine alte Gāthā zu zitieren, die einst König Janaka gesprochen haben soll. Obwohl er in den Augen anderer über grenzenlosen Reichtum zu verfügen schien, war er innerlich frei von allen Gegensatzpaaren (dvandva) und ein zu Lebzeiten Befreiter (jīvanmukta), da er den Paramātman, das höchste Selbst, als das Wesen des mokṣa unmittelbar geschaut hatte. Sein Vers lautet: „Unendlich, wahrlich, ist mein Reichtum — und doch ist davon nichts mein. Selbst wenn ganz Mithilā in Flammen stünde, würde nichts von dem, was mein ist, verbrennen.“
