प्रभु: प्रथभकल्पस्य योडनुकल्पे न वर्तते । न साम्परायिकं तस्य दुर्मतेविद्यते फलम्‌,जो मुख्य विधिके अनुसार कर्म करनेमें समर्थ होकर भी गौण विधिसे काम चलाता है, उस दुर्बुद्धि मनुष्यको पारलौकिक फलकी प्राप्ति नहीं होती

prabhuḥ prathamakalpasya yo 'nukalpe na vartate | na sāmparāyikaṃ tasya durmateḥ vidyate phalam ||

Bhishma sprach: „Wer imstande ist, eine Handlung nach der primären Regel (der rechten, hauptsächlichen Vorschrift) zu vollziehen, aber dennoch nach einem sekundären oder ersetzenden Verfahren handelt, erlangt keinen jenseitigen Lohn. Eine solche, aus schlechtem Urteil geborene Wahl untergräbt die sittliche Lauterkeit der Tat und beraubt sie ihrer höheren geistigen Frucht.“
