ते पश्यत सुतस्नेहो यादृश: पशुपक्षिणाम्‌ | न तेषां धारयित्वा तान्‌ कश्चिदस्ति फलागम:,“पशु और पक्षियोंका भी अपने बच्चेपर जैसा स्नेह होता है, उसे तुम देखो। यद्यपि स्नेहमें आसक्त उन पशु-पक्षी-कीट आदि प्राणियोंको अपने बच्चोंके पालन-पोषण करनेपर भी परलोकमें उनसे उस प्रकार कोई फल नहीं मिलता जैसे कि परलोककी गतिमें स्थित हुए मुनियोंको यज्ञादि क्रियासे मिलता है

te paśyata sutasneho yādṛśaḥ paśupakṣiṇām | na teṣāṃ dhārayitvā tān kaścid asti phalāgamaḥ ||

Bhishma sprach: „Beobachtet, welche Art von Zuneigung zu ihren Jungen selbst bei Tieren und Vögeln besteht. Und doch bringt es diesen Geschöpfen im Jenseits keine sichere Frucht (geistige Vergeltung), wenn sie ihre Nachkommen lediglich erhalten und aufziehen.“
