Daṇḍa as the Foundation of Social Order (दण्डप्रतिष्ठा)

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that daṇḍa—lawful punishment and the governing power that enforces it—is essential for sustaining social order. Without restraint, human beings may fall into mutual predation and adharma; with daṇḍa, society is protected from chaos and moral darkness.

In the Shānti Parva’s discussion on rājadharma, the speaker emphasizes the practical necessity of punishment as a tool of governance. The statement argues that fear of daṇḍa prevents people from harming one another, and that without such protection society would collapse into anarchy.
