भीष्म उवाच त्वदयुक्तोडयमनुप्रश्नो युधिष्ठिर सुखोदय: । शृणु मे पुत्र कार्त्स्न्येन गुह्यमापत्सु भारत,भीष्मजीने कहा--भरतनन्दन बेटा युधिष्ठिर! तुम्हारा यह विस्तारपूर्वक पूछना बहुत ठीक है। यह सुखकी प्राप्ति करानेवाला है। आपत्तिके समय क्या करना चाहिये? यह विषय गोपनीय होनेसे सबको मालूम नहीं है। तुम यह सब रहस्य मुझसे सुनो
bhīṣma uvāca tvad-yukto 'yam anu-praśno yudhiṣṭhira sukha-udayaḥ | śṛṇu me putra kārtsnyena guhyam āpatsu bhārata ||
Bhīṣma sprach: „Yudhiṣṭhira, mein Sohn, deine Nachfrage ist wohlgesetzt und angemessen; sie führt zum Aufgang wahren Wohlergehens. Höre mich, Sohn, in voller Ausführlichkeit: Was in Zeiten des Unheils zu tun ist, ist eine gehütete Sache, nicht allgemein bekannt. O Bharata, vernimm von mir diese geheime Lehre.“
