वैशम्पायन उवाच
Worth and moral standing are indicated not only by what one knows (adhyayana, disciplined study) but also by what one does (karma, lived conduct). The epic repeatedly treats these as complementary: learning should shape action, and action should reflect understanding.
Vaiśampāyana continues his narration to the king, introducing a point about “them” being characterized or evaluated through their deeds and through their study. The verse is a connective line that frames the next statement by highlighting action and learning as the relevant criteria.
