Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Lament and Inquiry (Śalya-parva, Adhyāya 2)

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the public, undeniable nature of karmic consequence in war: even the greatest teachers and heroes fall, and their fall is witnessed by all—highlighting the gravity of adharma, the inevitability of death in battle, and the ethical weight borne by the community that participates and observes.

Vaiśampāyana narrates that Droṇa was slain in full view of the assembled warriors, drawing a parallel to the earlier, widely witnessed fall of Bhīṣma—emphasizing that these pivotal deaths occurred openly on the battlefield.
