शास्त्र न शास्ति दुर्बुद्धिं श्रेयसे चेतराय च | न वै वृद्धो बालमतिर्भवेद्‌ राजन्‌ कथंचन,“राजन! जिसकी बुद्धि खोटी है, उसे शास्त्र भी भला-बुरा कुछ नहीं सिखा सकता। मन्दबुद्धि बालक वृद्धों-जैसा विवेकशील किसी प्रकार नहीं हो सकता

śāstraṁ na śāsti durbuddhiṁ śreyase cetarāya ca | na vai vṛddho bālamatir bhaved rājan kathaṁcana ||

Vaiśampāyana sprach: „O König, die Schrift vermag einen Menschen mit verkehrtem Verständnis nicht wahrhaft zu belehren—weder ihn zum Heilsamen zu führen noch ihn vom Schädlichen abzuhalten. Wessen Geist kindisch bleibt, kann auf keine Weise den weisen, urteilsfähigen Ältesten gleich werden.“
